5 out of 5 stars A GREAT CONTEMPLATIVE CONCEPT ALBUM   March 28, 2010

I was never a big fan of Paul Anka's most popular music, the hits, the teenybopper stuff from the 50's and 60's. In the later 70's I came across this LP in a cutout bin in a record store. Seeing that the cover art was by Andy Warhol and it was produced by Michel Columbier, I thought I would give it a try. To this day I continue to play the LP and there are songs on this album that I simply can't hear often enough. The entire album is really a masterpiece of pop composition. All the lyrics are intelligent and thoughtful. The music is very melodic and catchy, yet serious. For some reason it hits all my chords. The list of studio musicians is like a who's who of the 70's and 80's West Coast sound, the arrangements are impeccable, and album just flows seamlessly from song to song. For me it has never become dated. My only wish is that Paul Anka had written and recorded more albums like this. I know it wasn't a big hit and the market talks. I hope he can get himself back to these kind of projects before the end of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Anka's - The Painter   June 7, 2009
Susan M. Madigan (penticton, BC)
Have been looking for this particular cd for years to no avail until I came across it through Amazon. I'm thinking it must truly be a collector's item as I've never paid $200.00 for a CD, but I must say it's up there as one of my top favorites from the 70's, was not necessarily a 'hit' but one I got a lot of meaning from. No fanciful, girly lyrics in this song, but deeper than his usual thoughts. A well written song, timeless.

I agree 100 percent with reviewer David Boughton. This is actually my favorite of all the Paul Anka LPs and CDs I own. This is not so much a review of "The Painter" as it is a plea to the proverbial Powers That Be to finally, after all these years, release "The Painter" on CD. This album contains one of his best recordings entitled "Closing Doors." Why that song has never been released on CD is a mystery to me. Why the entire album has never been released on CD also baffles me. If you have an opportunity to purchase a mint or near mint copy of this on LP until (hopefully) it is released on CD, do yourself a favor and don't hesitate to pick it up. This is among Paul Anka's best, if not THE best! If you are a Paul Anka fan and have never heard "The Painter," this is a must for your collection. It has some of the most beautiful and haunting material the master musician has ever recorded.

I have a fairly comprehensive collection of Paul Anka albums, and enjoy his original material very much. Of all of the albums I've heard, this is the one that most impresses me as more than just a collection of songs. I don't understand why virtually none of this has appeared on any compilations.
The music is intimate, soul-searching, and flows beginning to end as a journey. "The Painter" is a gorgeous reflection on artistry that is very moving, and captures well the theme and essence of the collection. The song lyrics are poetic and reflective, and the music romantic and sophisticated.
With The Painter, Paul Anka has turned out a masterpice of thoughtful, sincere and loving music.
This gem deserves to be reissued.
